In 2025, the news came out that the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System was in serious financial trouble.  In 2024, the bombshell hit the news that the WSFCS district had a $46 million budget shortfall.  This resulted in an devastating and unprecedented belt-tightening - at a time when NC schools were alredy far behind the national average and surrounding states.

What could we do?  As small congregation we could not make much of an impact on the massive deficit. But teh Board decided to do what we could -- we "adopted" the nearby Konnoak Middle School, which at that point had no local partnerships. Pastor Jackman published an op-ed in the Winston-Salem Journal challenging other churches to do the same, to make the difference in the school nearest their church building.

We continue our enthusiastic partnership with Konnoak Middle School (Go, Owls!).  Our members contribute paper, pencils, Kleenexes, and all the other stuff that 50 years ago was supplied by the state. We send regular notes of encouragement to the faculty and staff, and provide occasional special breakfasts or lunches for the teachers.  Some of our members volunteer in the media center ("library" to you old folks) or volunteer for lunch supervision so that teachers can actually have 40 minutes off duty to do the many other things they need to do.
